The Prevalence of Hypertension in Children with Proteinuria versus Healthy Children

Abstract

Background: One of the most significant urinary disorders that can be diagnosed easily is proteinuria. The prevalence of proteinuria in children is 10%. Hypertension and proteinuria have close relationship with kidney diseases. Due to the high prevalence of hypertension in children, this study was performed to determine the relationship between hypertension and proteinuria.
Methods: This case-control study was performed on 30 children with proteinuria (case group) and 30 healthy children (control group). Proteinuria was diagnosed through using urine dipstick analysis and based on the urinary protein to creatinine ratio (UPCR). Also, blood pressure of children and their parents and children’s BMI were measured. Data were statistically analyzed through SPSS16.
Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic information and BMI. Although systolic and diastolic blood pressures of children in the case group (88.65 and 62 Mm Hg) were higher than those of the control group (83.66 and 60 Mm Hg), this difference was not statistically significant. However, systolic and diastolic blood pressures of children showed positive relationship with systolic blood pressure of their fathers (P<0.05). There was no significant relationship between blood presure and proteineria.
Conclusion: Considering the relationship between the blood pressure of parents and their children, children's hypertension can be considered  as a risk factor for hypertension in adulthood. This shows the importance of monitoring blood pressure in children especially in those with hypertensive parents.
