Effectiveness of Parenting Skills Training on Depression, Anxiety and Quality of Life of Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract

Background: Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) cause a lot of problems for their family, especially their parents, so that appropriate interventions are required for management and coping with these problems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of parenting skills training on depression, anxiety, and quality of life of parents of children with autism spectrum disorders.
Methods: In this clinical trial, 22 parents of children with autism spectrum disorders were included. Data were collected using Beck depression inventory (BDI), Beck anxiety inventory (BAI), and 26-item WHO quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-26). The questionnaires were completed before and after the intervention. The intervention was 8-session parenting skills training hold once a week (90min). The training sessions were designed by the researchers according to the Tripl- p (positive parenting program) and methods of training children with autism spectrum disorders.
Results: There was significant difference between mean depression scores of parents before and after the intervention (P=0.026). According to the results of paired t-test, although mean anxiety score was lower after the intervention, it was not significant (P=0.263). There was no significant difference between mean score of quality of life before and after the intervention (P=0.456).
Conclusion: This study showed positive effect of parenting skills training on decreasing depression of parents of children with autism spectrum disorders.
