Faculty Development; Prerequisite for Medical Student's Professional Formation

Abstract

Background: It is accepted that teaching and learning professionalism is a challenge for medical educators. There are different reasons in this regard; however one of the most important ones is undeveloped faculty members. Historically, in medical education, the most emphasis was on the scientific and technical aspects of medicine, and the professional character of the trainees was not mentioned explicitly. Therefore, medical educators also may ignore teaching professionalism, which will have a great influence on the professional formation of students.
Methods: This manuscript, by introducing the principles of designing a faculty development program, proposed some practical points to design and conduct a faculty development program on professionalism and professional formation of medical students.
Results: Developing an appropriate faculty development program needed the recognition of the organizational culture, establishing the program goals based on the organizations priorities, and setting the proper educational objectives with attention to variety of teaching methods and interdisciplinary approaches.
Conclusion: Considering the aim of a faculty development program on professionalism, which is nurturing and promoting the faculty members’ abilities, it is necessary to mention that, this approach could lead to better professional formation of medical students. This will eventuate to better role acquisition, and improve the quality of patients care.
